Hey, what’s up it's James from Chinese Drama Land,  and welcome back to another video on the channel.    Today, I'll be listing the "Top 10 Best Highest  Rated Chinese Historical Costume Dramas" of the   first half of 2023. While this year hasn't  been the strongest for Chinese historical    costume dramas, there have been some absolute  gems that were a true pleasure to watch.    The dramas featured on this list are based on ratings from the Chinese    review site Douban, which is often referred to as  the Chinese version of IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes.    What sets Douban apart is its  coverage of books and music ratings   in addition to film and drama ratings. For  this list, I've included dramas with at least    17,000 ratings. Please note that this  list focuses solely on historical costume    dramas and excludes modern dramas. However, I will also be creating a    video featuring the "Top 10 Best Highest  Rated Chinese Modern Dramas" of the first    half of 2023. Without further ado, let's get started with the video.  Number 10. Till The End Of The Moon  长月烬明 - starring Luo Yunxi and Bai Lu.   Till The End Of The Moon 长月烬明 is  a 40-episode xianxia drama adapted    from the novel Black Moonlight Holds the  BE Script. The drama tells the story of    the daughter of a powerful sect leader who ultimately sacrifices herself to rewrite    history and the future in a desperate  state of wanting to save the world from    the clutches of the demon lord. So she gets  sent five hundred years into the past to   prevent the demon lord from turning into  his cruel and bloodthirsty demon persona.    This angsty xianxia drama presents itself  in four distinct arcs, each with its own    strengths and drawbacks. Undoubtedly, the first arc stands out as the most    captivating and immersive, drawing  viewers into a compelling mortal realm.    The second arc, while visually stunning, suffers  from lazy writing and an overreliance on tired   xianxia tropes, which hampers its impact.  The subsequent arcs show signs of recovery    but fail to recapture the addictive allure  of the initial storyline. A notable issue    lies with the poorly developed second couple, lacking chemistry that undermines    their narrative impact. While the source  material may have held great potential,    this adaptation falls short. In terms  of production values, this is undeniably   a high-budget drama, yet its execution often  misses the mark. The exaggerated makeup,    far from flattering, appears excessive and  detracts from the overall visual experience.    The drama's ending, while fitting and inevitable for    Tantai Jin and Li Susu's characters, leaves  much to be desired in terms of the writing.    A more refined approach could have made their  journey more palatable. However, amidst these   shortcomings, one cannot deny the allure  of the drama's phantasmagorical CGI,    particularly within the game world, which  dominates the clashes between good and evil,    both at the beginning and end. In summary, while the drama showcases moments of    brilliance and an intriguing premise, it struggles  to maintain consistency throughout its various    arcs. Flaws in character development, writing, and execution hinder its potential,    despite the undeniable visual spectacle  offered by its CGI-infused sequences.    Till The End Of The Moon 长月烬明 has an average  rating of 5.6 from around 337,000 ratings.  Number 9. Destined 长风渡 - starring  Bai Jingting and Song Yi.   Destined 长风渡 is a 40-episode drama that tells  the story of Liu Yu Ru, the legitimate daughter    of a former cloth merchant, who lives a  stoic life with her mistreated mother.    In an unfortunate turn of events, she is married to Gu Jiu Si, the    infamous son of Yangzhou's wealthiest  family known for his idle and lazy ways.    Initially, Gu Jiu Si holds a negative opinion  of Liu Yu Ru, perceiving her as cunning and   manipulative. However, as she adjusts to her  new life, she gains business knowledge from    her supportive mother-in-law and  develops a deeper connection with    Gu Jiu Si. Amidst the looming threat of war, the Commissioner of Yangzhou instills fear    and turmoil, pushing the Gu family  into unimaginable circumstances.    Through the shared hardships they endure,  the compassionate couple grows closer, their   destinies intertwining toward a path of greatness.    The scriptwriter of this drama noticeably  diminished the strength, intelligence,    and competence of the female lead,  while simultaneously enhancing the   qualities of the male characters, making  them more virtuous, capable, and influential.    As a result, the drama deviated from  its original narrative, shifting the    focus from a powerful female lead to a different dynamic. Nonetheless, the drama boasts commendable    production quality, and the main and supporting  cast members deliver solid performances in their    respective roles. Destined 长风渡 has an average rating of 6.5 from around 108,000 ratings.  Number 8. Unchained Love 浮图缘 -  starring Dylan Wang and Yukee Chen.   Unchained Love 浮图缘 is a 36-episode drama adapted  from the novel Fu Tu Ta and it's set during the    Longhua period, and it tells the story of eunuch  Xiao Duo played by Dylan Wang, who plotted with   Fu Wang to help him sit on the throne. Bu Yin Lou  played by Yukee Chen, was supposed to be buried    with the late Emperor, but she was rescued by  Xiao Duo. She's a lady-in-waiting meant to be the   emperor's woman. Due to her status, she  was supposed to follow him in death,    but Xiao Duo saves her because she has  caught the eye of Fu Wang, the crown    prince. So she stays at Xiao's manor, and over time, they grow closer to each other, however,    they cannot reveal their feelings. The  drama's production quality is quite good    and the acting of Peter Ho and Zeng Li  is also quite good. As for Dylan Wang   and Yukee Chen, their acting is acceptable  and the drama is worth checking out.    Unchained Love 浮图缘 has an average rating  of 6.7 from around 124,000 ratings.  Number 7. Warm On A Cold Night 九霄寒夜暖  - starring Li Yitong and Bi Wenjun.   Warm On A Cold Night 九霄寒夜暖 is a 36-episode drama  that tells the story of Li Yitong's character,    a young, talented, and personable female constable  with a keen investigatory mind who hails from the   Qian Kingdom and she constantly feels cold so she  is attracted to warmth. During her investigations,    she is forced to go undercover, where she  meets Han Zheng played by Bi Wenjun, a member   of the Qi Kingdom's ruling family. Han  Zheng is imbued with a wolf-like spirit,    which grants him phenomenal strength and  agility. It also makes his skin incredibly    warm to the touch – a factor that makes Su Jiu Er want to cuddle up to him!    But he lacks interpersonal skills and is  harsh and abrasive to everyone he meets.    Opposites attract, however - and this unusual  duo forms an increasingly close bond as   they investigate a strange murder case  that involves both of their kingdoms.    This drama has watchable production quality and  the overall aesthetics and style, color grading,    and lighting are quite good compared to other dramas.    Warm On A Cold Night 九霄寒夜暖 has an average  rating of 6.8 from around 23,000 ratings.  Number 6. Back From the Brink 护心  - starring Neo Hou and Zhou Ye.   Back From the Brink 护心 is a 40-episode xianxia  drama adapted from the novel Hu Xin that tells    the story of Tian Yao the ancient dragon. After  his lover's betrayal, he was badly wounded and   heartbroken. The woman he loved betrayed  him by dismembering him and stripping him    of his dragon scales and then sealing his  body parts in five places. But by luck,    his soul escapes and he meets Yan Hui, a dauntless, money-loving,    ousted Taoist disciple who vows to protect  him as he retrieves his missing bones.    This delightful rom-com xianxia drama is a  treasure trove of laughter. Though the plot   received criticism for deviating from the  beloved original novel, particularly in the    characterizations of Yan Hui and Tian Yao,  it still managed to captivate viewers from    the very beginning. Despite its low budget and at times cartoonish CGI,    the drama excels in storytelling, weaving a  phenomenal narrative that keeps audiences hooked.    Although I thoroughly enjoyed this  drama from start to finish, it becomes   apparent in the latter half that  there are too many shallow sub-plots    and overexploitation of the theme of love  obsession. Nevertheless, as a humorously    crafted tale, it revisits familiar xianxia themes without presenting any profound new revelations.    Despite its flaws, the drama remains a thoroughly  entertaining and enjoyable watch. Back From the    Brink 护心 has an average rating of 7.2 from around 83,000 ratings  Number 5. The Ingenious One 云襄传 -  starring Chen Xiao and Mao Xiaotong.   The Ingenious One 云襄传 is a 36-episode  wuxia drama adapted from the novel "Qianmen    The Secret Manual by Fang Baiyu". After  fifteen years of cultivation, Yun Xiang,    a disciple of the Yuntai sect, emerges into the world driven by the desire    for revenge against those who massacred his  family. Despite lacking martial arts prowess,    he possesses exceptional intelligence,  captivating those he encounters during   his travels. Alongside him is Shu Ya Nan, an  orphan raised by Yun Xiang's master, who conceals    her secrets and possesses remarkable martial arts  skills. Jin Biao, a master swordsman guided by a   strong sense of justice, and Su Ming Yu, a skilled  traveler with an uncanny understanding of martial    arts techniques and their weaknesses, complete the  group. Throughout their journey, Yun Xiang and his   friends face deception, betrayal,  and life-and-death struggles.    The pressing question remains: can they identify  the true villains, deliver justice to the land,    and achieve their long-awaited revenge, or will they succumb to the forces of evil?    The path ahead holds the answers as  they navigate a treacherous landscape,    fueled by determination and the bonds forged  through shared experiences. One area where   this drama could have improved is in  highlighting the adversary who employs    similar schemes against Yun Xiang. Critics  often note that Yun Xiang's ingenuity is not    sufficiently emphasized, and the narrative fails to convey the extent of his resource    limitations and overwhelming odds. While  Yun Xiang is described as a complex and    morally ambiguous character driven by  revenge, the portrayal of his backstory   feels cursory, leaving him devoid of  family, friends, or rich history. Likewise,    Shu Yanan's past remains shrouded in mystery  until late in the story, and her relationship    with Wen Cong is left unexplained. As a result, it becomes challenging to    comprehend her decisions and priorities,  which occasionally appear inconsistent.    The development of their romance feels  rushed and encounters obstacles at a point   where the plot should be building momentum toward  a climactic conclusion rather than delving into    romantic angst. In my opinion, the drama excels in  its subtle color palette, featuring muted garments   and accessories. While it initially starts  as a wuxia drama set in Jianghu (the martial    arts world), it later shifts toward palace  politics and power struggles. Nonetheless,    for enthusiasts of wuxia dramas like myself, this remains an enjoyable watch with    its unique charm. The Ingenious One 云襄传 has an  average rating of 7.3 from around 104,000 ratings.  Number 4. The Starry Love 星落凝成糖 -  starring Chen Xingxu and Li Landi.   The Starry Love 星落凝成糖 previously called Love  When The Stars Fall is a 40-episode xianxia drama    said to be the sequel to the 2018 hit drama  Ashes Of Love 香蜜沉沉烬如霜 that starred Deng Lun   and Yang Zi. This drama is the third installment  of The Honey Trilogy with the first being Ashes Of    Love 香蜜沉沉烬如霜 and the second being Skate Into  Love 冰糖炖雪梨 but the 3 dramas aren't connected   plot-wise but do share the common theme of  love. The Starry Love 星落凝成糖 is based on the    novel of the same name and tells the story of  two princesses, one good and one evil. He Xuanlin   plays Qing Kui, Ye Tan's elder  sister who's gentle and kind.    She gets betrothed to the Immortal tribe as  the Heavenly Consort. Li Landi plays Ye Tan,    Qing Kui's younger sister  whose smart and cunning. She   gets betrothed to the Demon tribe as  the Demon Consort but something happens,    and the two sister switch spots paving  the way for two beautiful romances and    also igniting a conspiracy that shakes the four realms. This drama has beautiful CGI Special    Effects and amazing chemistry between  the first and second main leads.    This drama is also a comedy and the entire  cast did an amazing job portraying their   roles. The Starry Love 星落凝成糖 has an average  rating of 7.3 from around 109,000 ratings.  Number 3. Under the Microscope 显微镜下的大明 -  starring Zhang Ruoyun, Wang Yang, and Qi Wei.   Under the Microscope 显微镜下的大明 is a 14-episode  short drama that tells the story of Shuai Jia Mo    played by Zhang Ruoyun, a man obsessed with  mathematics who stumbles upon a historical problem   in Jinhua County as he's met with multiple  obstacles in his attempts to correct the mistake,    triggering a tension between various  stakeholders. This period drama is a    very high-quality production and it also has a very consistent, coherent style,    many beautiful sceneries, and great  framing featured providing you extra    value of watching a beautiful period setting  drama with great acting from the entire cast.   Under the Microscope 显微镜下的大明 has an average  rating of 7.8 from around 120,000 ratings.  Number 2. The Blood Of Youth 少年歌行 - starring  Li Hongyi, Liu Xueyi, and Ao Ruipeng.   The Blood Of Youth 少年歌行 is a 40-episode  wuxia xianxia drama adapted from the    novel "Shao Nian Ge Xing" by Zhou Mu  Nan that has also been adapted into a    popular donghua that tells the story of a group of young people in their late teens,    and early 20s going into Jiang Hu (the martial  arts world) in a Wu Xia, Xian Xia world.    This drama is not dragger and it has  breathtaking action sequences, beautiful   CGI Special Effects, bromance between the  male main leads, and good storytelling.    The Blood Of Youth 少年歌行 has an average  rating of 8.1 from around 92,000 ratings.  Number 1. An Ancient Love Song 古相思曲 -  starring Yaqin Zhang and Guo Jianan.   An Ancient Love Song 古相思曲 is a 14-episode drama  based on a fan-made edit on Bilibili (the chinese    version of youtube). The drama tells the story of  Professor Shen Bu Yan, who accidentally travels to   the ancient era of Acacia, where he becomes  obsessed with finding the ancient secret of    this era. With the help of the warm girl, Lu  Yuan, will he be able to unravel the mystery?    In terms of production quality, this drama falls    on the lower end of the spectrum, with limited  resources allocated to props, costumes, sets,    and extras. Consequently, viewers should not  expect lavish visuals, expensive props, or   intricately choreographed scenes. However,  the fighting sequences remain watchable,    providing some entertainment value.  Despite its modest production values,    this drama shines in its well-crafted storytelling, making it a worthwhile    period drama to explore. Yaqin Zhang  delivers a standout performance,    showcasing her acting prowess, distinct style,  and impressive execution of the fighting scenes.   Her overall portrayal adds depth  and captivates the audience. While    the episodes are relatively short, spanning  around 20 to 30 minutes, the drama manages to    create a compelling narrative within its limited runtime. Despite its budgetary    constraints, this well-written period  drama offers an engaging experience,    anchored by Yaqin Zhang's remarkable acting.  This drama is a hidden gem and it's worth   checking out.
